Feb 03 - 04, 2018
This week Derivative website announced that on Feb 03 - 04 - 2018 will held the TouchDesigner Summit 2018 in Berlin Forum Factory and Visual Farm founder Luca Pietropaolo will give an exciting workshop on Projection Mapping and Pixel Mapping techniques.
TouchDesigner is a visual development platform that equips you with the tools you need to create stunning realtime projects and rich user experiences. Whether you're creating interactive media systems, architectural projections, live music visuals, or simply rapid-prototyping your latest creative impulse, TouchDesigner is the platform that can do it all. TouchDesigner allows to playback or generate content to most of existing outputs, from projectors to LED and Lasers. For more detailed information on the software please check Derivative website.
The Projection Mapping and Pixel Mapping workshop held in Berlin is meant for users that are already familiar with the TouchDesigner interface and its operators. Participants will learn how to map video content onto unconventional projection surfaces or addressable LED pixels.
The Berlin workshop will firstly focus on Projection Mapping, also known as video mapping. Projection mapping is a Projection technology used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection. These objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects or theatrical stages. By using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. The software can interact with a projector to fit any desired image onto the surface of that object. This technique is used by artists and advertisers alike who can add extra dimensions, optical illusions, and notions of movement onto previously static objects. The video is commonly combined with, or triggered by, audio to create an audio-visual narrative. More info Here.
With Touchdesigner Version 099, the most popular component, Kantan Mapper for mapping video onto shapes has been fully re-engineered for easier, more complex and rich mappings. The workshop will of course focus on the usage of this component with live demonstration of all its possibilities.
We will also give an introduction to pixel mapping techniques thanks to the system that we have developed and we have used to prototype several LED installations. Pixel mapping is a technique that allows to map any type of video content on lighting fixtures as they were part on a large matrix, usually creating something that can be described as an irregular and low resolution screen. This technique gives endless possibilities thanks to the flexibility of the LED technology. In fact this fixtures could be anything like PAR, moving spots or simple addressable LED strips.
In pixel mapping the software deals with each fixture as an individual pixel and sends information via DMX / Art-Net to the array. DMX512 is a standard for digital communication networks that are commonly used to control stage lighting and effects.
